Your Distant Relative May Be Closer Than You Think When You Start Your Search at the Texas State Vital Records Office

By: Shawn Anderson

Wouldn’t it be exciting to find out, when you visit the Texas State Vital Records Office, that you share a distant relative with Sandra Day O’Connor? Or how about Howard Hughes or H. Ross Perot? Or the famous woman golfer, Babe Didrikson Zaharias? Texas’ history is rich with famous, and infamous, characters and you could be related to any one of them.

Of course, you could also be related to Princess Grace or Lady Diana. Or Coco Chanel or George Washington. That’s what’s so great about researching your family ancestry. You never know what – or should I say who – you’re going to find next.

The Texas State Vital Records Office is a good place to start your family tree research, though. Their modern facility and state of the art equipment will enable you to quickly find the records you’re looking for so you can find it if you really are related to the person you’ve been speaking to on Facebook these last three years.

Of course the history of Texas includes the oil rush so you’re likely to run into a relative from just about anywhere in the United States. This country is known as The Melting Pot for a reason. People have been immigrating here from foreign lands for hundreds of years and even now we still suffer from wanderlust here in the US. People are constantly on the move which would seem to make it even more difficult to track down distant relatives. However with advances in research techniques and modern technology it’s easier now than ever before to find that great-great-great grandfather your family lost track of so long ago. And who knows? HE may be that person you’ve been speaking with on Facebook! You’ll find out soon enough though when you start your search at the Texas State Vital Records Office.

Illinois Vital Records Office

May 23rd, 2011 Jesse No comments

Wouldn’t it be exciting if you visited the Illinois Vital Records Office and found out you were related to Abraham Lincoln?  Or what if Mrs. O’Leary was your great-great grandmother twice removed?  Or maybe Brigham Young is a distant relative.  Illinois history is full of famous people.  If you think your relatives come from that area,  you might be very surprised to learn just who they are.

A few years ago studies were conducted that said that everyone on the planet was only 6 people away from knowing everyone else.  That means that if I were to reach out and touch 6 people I know, and they in turn each reached out to 6 people that they knew, and so on down the line, eventually everyone on the planet would be touching.  And with the explosion of socialization on the Internet now, it’s possible that it’s even fewer people we’d each need to know.  So it’s not inconceivable that you very well may be related to Abraham Lincoln or Mrs. O’Leary or Brigham Young.  And you never know what you’re going to find when you start searching at the Illinois State Vital Records Office.

The Internet has helped spark an increased interest in genealogical research and more and more people are traveling in search of the family roots.  And that new television show – Who Do You Think You Are? – is helping, too.  The Illinois Vital Records Office isn’t the only office seeing an increase in traffic.  People across the nation and around the world are searching out ancestors.  With the advances in DNA research and technology it’s even possible to trace your ancestry back to medieval times.  These are wonderful times that we live in and there’s so much interesting history you can learn about your family and their origins when you get started researching your family tree.

What is the best source for public information on birth, marriage, and divorce records for Tennessee?

January 12th, 2011 Jesse 1 comment

Question by Rose C: What is the best source for public information on birth, marriage, and divorce records for Tennessee?
I am looking for birth, marriage, and divorce records for East Tennessee. I am having no luck on Ancestry or Genealogy. What is the best site to get the most information for the least amount of money? In particular, I am looking for 1950 to 2010.

Best answer:

Answer by Patricia
See if your library gives free access to Heritage Quest. They will either give you a password or you use your library card barcode number to get in. You can access it from home via the library’s portal. I find it much easier to use and more accurate than Ancestry, it is free, and it brings up scans a lot faster. If your library doesn’t have access, ask them if they have a reciprocal agreement with another library to get access. I don’t know if any of the sites have data as new as you are asking, however. Although it is public record, the geneaology sites try to avoid online access to people who are still alive.

Marriage License Records – Track Your Ancestry

January 9th, 2011 Jesse No comments

If you’re like many people, you have an interest in tracing your family tree. It’s a lot easier to find your ancestors these days, because public records are so accessible.

If you are interested in genealogy, but don’t know where to start looking, you might want to think about accessing marriage license records, which will help you begin your family history search.

What do you Need

The good news is that you need very little to begin your search. In fact, all you need is the following:

A good source from which to retrieve the records
Information about the individual/s you wish to search
Access to the internet
A few spare minutes

Of course, the amount of information that you will need about a person before you can search for his or her marriage records will depend on a number of factors.

For example, if you know which state’s records to search for, you may only need a name. However, if you are unsure of the state that he or she resided in and/or your relative has a fairly common name, you may need other details, such as date of birth, etc.

Similarly, the amount of spare you time you will need depends largely on how you propose to conduct the search.

For instance, if you intend to use the free service provided by the state, you may need to do a little more of the spadework.

Specialist public records sites, on the other hand, do all of the work for you and can offer the information that you have requested within a very short period of time.

How to Find a Good Source for Public Records

As mentioned above, it is possible to track down all public records from your local authority for free. However, this is not always the easiest or most time efficient method of searching.

Therefore, many people choose to pay a specialist records search company. These can be found online and a brief search engine query will demonstrate just how many of these organizations are available.

It may take a little research to find the best records search site for your needs. However, once you have a found a good source, you will be able to perform all of your searches quickly.

In addition, unlike state authorities that can only supply you with records for that particular state, these sites are a one-stop source for records across the country.

Of course, when searching for your family history, it is particularly useful to have nationwide access to pubic records in just one place.

As previously stated, it is worth doing a little research if you intend to use the services of a records search website. In addition, it is advisable to read the site’s terms and conditions carefully.

When trying to search for marriage license records, it is wise to ensure that you have found a reputable organization before submitting any of your personal or payment details.

Is it possible one of my ancestors married four different men?

June 9th, 2010 Jesse 9 comments

I’ve found 4 marriage records from Florida on my father’s aunt, but no other records for the men they say she married. It also says that one of her husbands had six other wives!
Is there any way on Earth they got married this many times?
What could be going on here? I’m doing all my research on ancestry.com
No… I’m pretty sure they weren’t Mormons LOL

But this was all during the 1950′s and after. It sounds bizarre for that time period.
I should have mentioned this in the beginning but the records are all at least 2 years apart, 6 seems to be the biggest gap between the records.

How do you find out if your parents were ever married?

June 8th, 2010 Jesse 1 comment

I was a foster kid and my parents are deceased. My aunts won’t tell me and I am trying to find out if my parents ever married. I know I can try the vital records dept but you have to buy the marriage certificate when all I want is a yes or no. I don’t care for those ancestry websites because they don’t do the years I am searching or city I want. Is there another way?

Ancestry Help…stuck on finding parents?

June 7th, 2010 Jesse 7 comments

I’ve had great success doing geneology for my family…for years. Until now…I’m STUCK!

I know all about a person who was born in 1865…his life, marriage, date of death, etc.
However, I am totally unable to find out who his parents are. All that I know is that they came from Germany, and he was born in Ohio.

Without birth records (weren’t available at the time), or clear information on ANY of the images I have obtained, what is the best way to try to track down his parents?

Even the death records did not have the information, unfortunately.
I think I got the information that it was not required (by law) to have birth records until some later time (1890′s?), so I don’t know where to even start looking for a birth record.

We’ve obtained the death record, which unfortunately did not list the names of his parents (by some fluke).

I’ve researched many of those websites extensively, but I really am hitting a brick wall.

Thank you all so much for your help, though. There are a couple of ideas I may try here.

Unfortunately, it was sort of a common name, so it looks like I will be kept busy for awhile!
