Question by Rose C: What is the best source for public information on birth, marriage, and divorce records for Tennessee?
I am looking for birth, marriage, and divorce records for East Tennessee. I am having no luck on Ancestry or Genealogy. What is the best site to get the most information for the least amount of money? In particular, I am looking for 1950 to 2010.

See if your library gives free access to Heritage Quest. They will either give you a password or you use your library card barcode number to get in. You can access it from home via the library’s portal. I find it much easier to use and more accurate than Ancestry, it is free, and it brings up scans a lot faster. If your library doesn’t have access, ask them if they have a reciprocal agreement with another library to get access. I don’t know if any of the sites have data as new as you are asking, however. Although it is public record, the geneaology sites try to avoid online access to people who are still alive.

What are the best Records search websites?

May 13th, 2010 Jesse 1 comment

Hello, I would like to know the best reliable and not too expensive web sites to search for marriage licenses, death certificates, drivers license, etc. I have been, and paid for 3 sites that actually don’t give you much after you have joined. Also, I notice some sites offer ‘complete’ searches on anything, for 29.95, and others charge 40 dollars for a single search! Of course I am skeptical on the 29.95 one. Thank you very much for your reply!

How best to preserve an old town clerk’s record book with handwritten birth, marriage, & death records?

I would like to make sure that this book – over 150 years old – is stored in a way that will preserve it, AND will also be accessible to people who want to see their family history. Any ideas on whom I should contact? (BTW contacting the town’s historical society is NOT an option, as they are the people who are asking me about it! – and the local library does not have appropriate storage facilities).
