Dalton is the county seat of Whitfield Co. The county clerks office is usually located in the Courthouse. It may be in one of the 2 Administration buildings. Here is the govt.’s web site that gives the address of the 3 buildings.

Is a Tennessee Marriage License restricted to the county in which it is obtained?

February 13th, 2012 Jesse 1 comment

Question by Wes: Is a Tennessee Marriage License restricted to the county in which it is obtained?
I am about to get married (in Tennessee) and need to get a marriage license. I have heard that there have been problems getting a license in one county and actually getting married in another county. Is this true? Or is it a state license that is valid throughout the state over its 30 day validity period. I live in Knox County and will be getting married in Williamson County next week. I won’t be there until Friday, so it’s quite inconvenient if I must obtain the document there. Any (quick!) help is appreciated.
If you’re wondering why I’m asking the Intertubes instead of calling the county clerk’s office, then you have obviously never tried to get anyone down there who knows anything to answer the phone or return any messages.
Before being joined in marriage, the parties shall present to the minister or officer a license under the hand of a county clerk in this state, directed to such minister or officer, authorizing the solemnization of a marriage between the parties. Such license shall be valid for thirty (30) days from its issuance by the clerk.
The county clerk issuing a marriage license is hereby authorized to record and certify any license used to solemnize a marriage that is properly signed by the officiant when such license is returned to the issuing county clerk. The issuing county clerk shall forward the record to the office of vital records to be filed and registered with such office. If a license issued by a county clerk in Tennessee is used to solemnize a marriage outside Tennessee, such marriage and parties, their property and their children shall have the same status as if the marriage were solemnized in this state. How do i go about getting a copy of our wards marriage license from the county office?

Question by Lori T: How do i go about getting a copy of our wards marriage license from the county office?
Hi, I am a case manager for a court appointed Guardian and she sends me questions to resolve daily and I ask many of them here. So who do i speak to to get a copy of someones marriage license and what legal docs do i need and so on.
The county office will be in Manatee or Desoto county Florida. Thanks in advance if U know the procedure! L:)
I am lucky to have a job- I’m working for a guardian in Florida via a virtual office- computer-scanned docs-google case noting, on line file folders text messaging an so on.

There are no jobs for me here in rural Michigan at this time. No social service jobs are available, also the starting pay at almost every job is abour 8.50 an hour. I did work at a Homeless shelter earning that ( 8.50 an hour, how humiliating!) For me,There is no ‘training’ I am working alone here and glad I got out of the very stressful shelter work.

I worked with an FSSA contract in my own office in Indiana a year and a half ago ( a GREAT job). All this Guardianship work is new ground for me.

I search for the right answer all the time here and if it doesn’t appear I do my own research -Thanks for your commment. L:)

Is there a way to find California divorce records from the late 1800s (Stanislaus County)?

February 8th, 2012 Jesse 2 comments

Question by MishMash [I am not one of your fans]: Is there a way to find California divorce records from the late 1800s (Stanislaus County)?
I am most positive that I have ancestors that divorced around1875 in Stanislaus County, California. They were married to each other in 1866 and by 1875 they were both remarried to other people. I can find transcribed records of the marriages, but not of they’re divorce.

Anywhere that’s convenient to you. It doesn’t matter. It just has to be a CA marriage license if you’re getting married in CA.

Applying For A Marriage License
Before getting married in Chicago or suburban Cook County, couples must obtain a marriage license from the Cook County Clerk’s office.

Eligibility
Under Illinois law, only eligible persons can marry. Both the bride and groom must:

be 18 years of age or older

be of opposite sex

not be blood relatives

Individuals who reside out of state may not apply for a marriage license in Illinois if such a marriage would not be legal in their home state.

Exceptions
Under state law, first cousins older than 50 years of age may marry.

Under state law, applicants who are 16 and 17 years old may obtain a marriage license with parental consent.

Both parents or legal guardians must:

appear in person

provide sworn consent of the marriage at that time

provide valid identification

If a court-appointed legal guardian is providing consent, a certified copy of the appointment is required.

Applicants who are 16 or 17 must present the following:

a certified copy of their birth certificate

a second form of identification showing their date of birth

Applying
Couples must appear together at one of the Cook County Clerk’s six locations. They must:

Fill out and sign a marriage license application.

Present valid identification with proof of age.

Effective June 2, 2008, the marriage license fee will increase by $ 5 to $ 35 (cash only).

Applicants who have divorced within the last six months must provide a certified copy of their divorce decree upon applying for a marriage license.

Timelines and restrictions
Marriage licenses are:

issued while you wait

effective the following calendar day after they are issued

valid for 60 days

effective only in Chicago and suburban Cook County

After the marriage ceremony occurs
The individual(s) performing the ceremony must complete the bottom portion of the marriage license and mail or deliver it to the Clerk’s office.

You may obtain a copy of your marriage certificate upon request.
