Not sure about CA. In Illinois you have to have your license issued in the same county you’re marrying in. Your pastor should know this, or you can call your county clerk.

Dalton is the county seat of Whitfield Co. The county clerks office is usually located in the Courthouse. It may be in one of the 2 Administration buildings. Here is the govt.’s web site that gives the address of the 3 buildings.

I am about to get married (in Tennessee) and need to get a marriage license. I have heard that there have been problems getting a license in one county and actually getting married in another county. Is this true? Or is it a state license that is valid throughout the state over its 30 day validity period. I live in Knox County and will be getting married in Williamson County next week. I won’t be there until Friday, so it’s quite inconvenient if I must obtain the document there. Any (quick!) help is appreciated.
If you’re wondering why I’m asking the Intertubes instead of calling the county clerk’s office, then you have obviously never tried to get anyone down there who knows anything to answer the phone or return any messages.
Before being joined in marriage, the parties shall present to the minister or officer a license under the hand of a county clerk in this state, directed to such minister or officer, authorizing the solemnization of a marriage between the parties. Such license shall be valid for thirty (30) days from its issuance by the clerk.
The county clerk issuing a marriage license is hereby authorized to record and certify any license used to solemnize a marriage that is properly signed by the officiant when such license is returned to the issuing county clerk. The issuing county clerk shall forward the record to the office of vital records to be filed and registered with such office. If a license issued by a county clerk in Tennessee is used to solemnize a marriage outside Tennessee, such marriage and parties, their property and their children shall have the same status as if the marriage were solemnized in this state. TN ยง 36-3-103: (a), (c)(1)
