why do free birth records info (ex: ancestry.com) stop at 1920?
I can find marriage, death, and even some christening records after 1920…. but no birth records for the state of Indiana after 1920. Anyone know why?

persons born in 1920 are easily still living.
No one has the right to birth records of living people, unless they can show a direct relationship by state standards.

to clarify..
the social security death index is updated within about a month following the death of someone. It is an index only.. it is not the death certificate itself.. which is still limited for access to family members only. And the cert is not free, except to the family at time of death.
heres a link i hope you find what your looking for this should have your records
Ancestry’s database comes from:
“Original data: Works Progress Administration. Index to Birth Records. Indiana: Indiana Works Progress Administration, 1938-1940.”
The WPA only microfilmed records up to 1920 and that is all Ancestry has to purchased form the NARA Library to transcribe for their online databases.
Do an internet search of Works Progress Administration for more information.
Use this website for what IN has online but don’t count on birth indexs later than 1920 as they may have privacy concerns and id theft conderns for those born after 1920, as they could still be living.

Yes, it’s completely arbitrary and varies from state to state.
Basically, every state has different rules about how old the birth record must be before it can be put in their archives and/or offered to the general public for free. As a general rule, before that date birth records within that given state must be purchased and can only be purchased by the named individual and certain direct relatives of that individual.
An exception to this rule would be if the if the individual named in the record is deceased, then anyone could purchase the record for genealogy research if they have a death record for the individual.
Death records are available for free within days after the death of an individual on the Social Security Death Index if the individual had a social security card.
